You Can Help Make A Difference!

Epilepsy is the most common disorder of the nervous system and it can lead to death. It effects over 3 million Americans of all ages, races and ethnic backgrounds. And, each year another 200,000 Americans will be develope seizures and epilepsy for the first time. Too many Americans living with seizures can’t enjoy what most people take for granted like cooking dinner, driving to the store, holding a job, riding a bike or remembering a favorite vacation. Too many are vulnerable to public misunderstanding, judgment and rejection.

Epilepsy is the third most common neurological disorder in the U.S. after Alzheimer's disease and stroke. It is equal in prevalence to cerebal palsy, multiple sclerosis and Parkinsosn's disease combined, but is the single most overlooked when it comes to public support, awarness and research.

Epilepsy strikes most often among the very young and the very old, although anyone can get it at any age. In the U.S., it currently affects more than 326,000 children under the age of fifteen and more than 90,000 of them have severe seizures that cannot be adequately treated.

One of the most common mis-conceptions regarding this disease is that its effects are no more severe than unconciousness and "shaking". The facts are that this year alone, another 200,000 people will be diagnosed with epilepsy and an estimated 25,000 to 50,000 will die of seizures and seizure related causes, including status epelepticus (non-stop seizures), sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP), drowning, and other accidents when a seizure occurs. Many of those victims will be children.
